Parent-Child Playtime

Laying a foundation for a lifetime of health and fitness starts at home

We parents know kids need freedom of motion in infancy, movement and sensory rich play in preschool and early elementary.  Young children thrive with daily exercise, active, creative play, however, sometimes, just carving out that 30 minutes of quality time with kids can be a challenge.

The truth is that the best thing you can do for your child and your self is to prioritize at least 20-30 minutes of one-on-one playtime daily - kids exercise, kids yoga, kids creative dramatics, kids pretend play, kids craft or art creation, kids outing - any activity they are excited about and you participate in.   I made this committment with my son when he was young.  It made such a difference in our relationship and his behavior.  When we had our special time, we were connected through fun activity.  We didn't struggle as much with the day-to-day stuff such as eating, bedtime, manners, etc.  Additionally, the exercise and bonding was great for me!  I would unwind, laugh and feel rejuvenvated.  I would be a better person and parent afterward.

I actually created Move With Me Action Adventures to help parents and teachers provide not just more kids yoga and kids fitness and life skills learning for their children, but also to give them the opportunity to enjoy more daily special playtime with them.  I want to make it easy to connect through play and model joy, health and fitness for your kids.   Hopefully, the Move With Me DVDs and these regular PLAYTIME TIPS will give you a terrific jump-start to making special time a daily event.

PLAYTIME TIP #1: Feather Catch and Painting:

Find or buy some craft feathers and drinking straws.  Pick 2-3 feathers and throw them up in the air like leaves.  Try to catch them before they hit the ground.  Play this inside or out until yo're both tired.

Then slide the stem of the feather into a drinking straw.  This is your pretend paint brush.  Ask your child how they want their face painted and then transform them!  Make sure that it feels soothing.  Then invite him/her to paint your face or let your painting evolve into a relaxing feel-good feather massage anywhere that doesn't tickle.  Be gentle and soothing.  Show your child how to be that way, too.  Enjoy ....
